2005 was the last Thanksgiving I shared with my father.  Thanksgiving was our holiday.  We would spend weeks on the phone planning the menu and days in the grocery store buying everything in sight.  My father would never turn down a recipe because of its long list of ingredients.  It was as if he chose the ones that ingredient lists spilled onto the second page.  No matter what meal my father was preparing you would never see a box, can, or jar of anything.  If you could make it from scratch, he did.  Back then those recipes didn’t bother me either.  They meant more time by his side sharing with him something he loved to do.  In 2005 we made it onto the front of the local newspaper because of our multiple carts full of food.  Our Thanksgiving gatherings were never small and always very eclectic.

Thanksgiving Menu 2005

Dad’s Notes

  • Homemade Onion Dip & Chips
  • Cream of Pumpkin Soup
  • Marinated Roast Turkey
  • Turkey Gravy
  • Andouille Sausage and Corn Bread Stuffing
  • Sweet Potato Casserole
  • Buttermilk Drop Biscuits
  • Cheesy Green Bean Casserole
  • Baked Corn Casserole

That was just the main course and the dessert table was just as full of fabulous items.

Since my fathers passing in 2006, I have had a hard time with this holiday.  Just not feeling it is worth all the effort.  As my children are getting older and time goes on I am seeing new reasons to celebrate.  This is the year I stepped into the role of teacher and my children became the students.  We made some of those recipes of 2005, some from my husband’s side of the family and some cans, boxes and jars may have mingled at the party as well.  We cherished those that were with us and missed those that have passed.  In the end it was a day of thanks and new beginnings.
