Composition - Rule of Thirds

Do you ever look at photos and wonder why some photos evoke emotion and others don't? You may think it is because of the camera that was used to take the photo. This is a common misconception that couldn't be farther from the truth. The phone camera has leveled the playing field. Even the most experienced photographers may not have all of their equipment with them, but most humans are hard pressed to go very far without their smart phones. So whether you have some crazy complicated DSLR that never gets off Auto or your main camera is also your phone, here are some tips to making your photos pull at the heart strings of those around you.

Composition

There are many rules of composition. Each rule takes time to digest but I would say it is one of the most important parts of achieving success in photography. Wether you are shooting in Auto or in Manual, it is what makes the difference between an effective image, and a poor one.

Rule of Thirds (ROT)

Rule of thirds is a very well know concept of composition, that has a large impact on your photos in auto or manual. This concept focuses on placing the main character/subject in perspective to the rest of the image. The rule teaches you to place your subject on one of the grid intersections while evaluating the background and foreground at the same time.

Practice:

Take a look in the viewfinder and see how the grid divides the contents of the viewfinder into thirds. Practice placing your main character/subject near the intersection of the grid.
